The recent call from China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi to U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken to lift sanctions on Chinese companies and individuals brings up an important question – would attempts to de-couple from China actually hurt the United States? Wang emphasized that the United States should consider lifting sanctions and not impede China’s legitimate development rights. However, Washington has imposed sanctions on several Chinese companies, accusing them of collaborating with China’s military, despite the firms’ denials.
Although there have been efforts to improve Sino-U.S. relations in recent months, both countries still face many points of friction. The Biden administration has placed bans on certain technology sales to Chinese companies citing national security risks. China, on the other hand, has accused Washington of weaponizing economic and trade issues. Wang Yi warned Blinken that the approach of “de-risking” into “de-China” and seeking to decouple from China will ultimately backfire on the U.S. itself.
During the meeting between Blinken and Wang, exchanges were described as “frank, substantial, and constructive”. The two officials discussed several regional issues including the situation in Ukraine and the Korean Peninsula. Wang also reiterated the importance of the United States abiding by the one-China principle for stability in the Taiwan Strait. China considers Taiwan as part of its territory, while Taiwan strongly opposes China’s sovereignty claims, asserting that only its people can determine its future.
There have been positive developments in Sino-U.S. relations, particularly since Chinese President Xi Jinping held talks with U.S. President Joe Biden in November. The agreements reached during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit covered areas such as fentanyl, military communications, and artificial intelligence. Both countries have taken steps towards cooperation, with the first joint meeting of a working group on fentanyl precursor chemicals in Beijing and financial officials from China hosting U.S. Treasury officials.
Blinken and Wang discussed the importance of exchanges at all levels between China and the U.S. in the future. They agreed to maintain dialogue in various areas moving forward. The statement from the Chinese foreign ministry highlighted the significance of staying connected and having open communication channels in order to address shared concerns and work towards a more stable relationship.
The call to lift sanctions on Chinese companies and individuals represents an opportunity for the United States to reevaluate its approach towards China. Building stronger communication channels and avoiding steps that could lead to further tensions is crucial for maintaining stability and cooperation between these two global superpowers.
