Morant, feeling threatened, responded by punching Holloway. This action led to Morant’s friend, Davonte Pack, also getting involved and punching Holloway. Pack was later arrested for misdemeanor assault, but the charge was eventually dismissed.
Judge Carol Chumney ruled that Morant is protected under Tennessee’s self-defense immunity statute and that the burden of proof now falls on Holloway and his legal team to prove otherwise. Despite this legal victory for Morant, the case is ongoing, and a trial is expected to be rescheduled to a later date.

In the 2023-24 season, he faced a 25-game suspension from the NBA for conduct deemed detrimental to the league after a video surfaced of him brandishing a firearm. The Grizzlies, who finished with the second-best record in the Western Conference the previous season, have struggled in Morant’s absence.
