Major cities such as Chicago, St. Louis, Indianapolis, Detroit, Cleveland, Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Boston, New York City, and Albany, New York are all experiencing these warnings. These warnings range from moderate to extreme, signifying the potential health risks associated with prolonged exposure to the heat. With temperatures soaring above 90 degrees for 150 million people, and over 100 degrees for 9 million people, the impact of this heatwave is widespread and significant.
Forecasters predict that the heatwave will persist through Friday and possibly beyond, making it one of the longest heatwaves experienced in decades for certain locations. A high-pressure system known as an upper-level ridge is responsible for the clear skies, warm, stable air, and record-breaking temperatures in the 90s and beyond. Some areas may even see temperatures as high as 105 degrees Fahrenheit, which is 25 degrees above normal for the summer season. The weather service in Phoenix has already reported temperatures as high as 112 degrees, above average and approaching the daily record of 115.
Authorities are urging people to take precautions during this heatwave, as relying on fans alone may not be enough to stay cool. People are advised to seek air-conditioned places such as libraries and shopping malls, or utilize the cooling centers that have been set up across the Southwest. The Nevada Division of Emergency Management is taking proactive measures to ensure the safety of residents. New temperature records are expected to be set in around 200 cities from the Ohio Valley to the Northeast, highlighting the severity of this heatwave.
In response to the extreme temperatures, schools like the Buffalo Public Schools have implemented half days for students to ensure their safety and well-being. Nighttime temperatures may provide some relief, dipping into the upper 60s and 70s, but the impact of the heatwave is still significant. Flash flooding is expected in the Dakotas and Minnesota, while rain from the Gulf of Mexico may bring relief to parts of Texas and Louisiana. There is also a watch for possible tropical storms developing in the Gulf, adding to the challenges posed by the heatwave.
