Subhadra Mahajan’s debut feature film, “Second Chance,” is set to premiere at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival. The black-and-white film, set in the Pir Panjal range of Himachal Pradesh in northern India, follows the story of a young woman named Nia. After experiencing a major trauma, Nia retreats to her family home in the Himalayas where she embarks on a healing journey with the help of time, nature, and unlikely friendships.
Mahajan draws inspiration from her personal experiences growing up in Himachal Pradesh, even though she currently resides in Mumbai. The film is a blend of Hindi, English, and Kullavi languages, reflecting the diverse cultural landscape of the region. According to Mahajan, “Second Chance” delves into the theme of healing as a wondrous and inexplicable process. In a world consumed by instant gratification and self-absorption, the film seeks to remind viewers of the innate connection between humanity and the natural world.
The film opens with Nia waking up in her family home, surrounded by the sounds of the wind whistling through the mountains. A heartfelt message from Sunny, the caretaker’s young child, sets the tone for Nia’s journey of self-discovery and renewal. Mahajan deliberately chose to cast local actors for “Second Chance,” with newcomers Dheera Johnson, Thakri Devi, and Kanav Thakur taking on leading roles. Johnson, a former teacher and dancer based in Los Angeles, delivers a compelling performance as Nia, capturing the complexity of her character’s emotional journey.
Mahajan collaborates once again with executive producer Pan Nalin, with whom she has worked on previous projects like “Angry Indian Goddesses” and “Faith Connections.” Nalin’s experience and creative input enhance the depth and authenticity of “Second Chance,” bringing Mahajan’s vision to life on the screen. The film’s aesthetic choices, including its black-and-white cinematography, underscore the timeless quality of Nia’s story and the universal themes of healing and connection that resonate with audiences around the world.
