Rumors have been circulating about the Google Pixel 9 series receiving a brand new weather application, which may eventually make its way to other Pixel devices as well. This app is currently accessible for download as an Android Package Kit (APK) on a hosting platform, even though its release is not yet official. However, it can still be sideloaded onto existing Pixel smartphones.
The Pixel Weather app is said to offer features powered by artificial intelligence (AI), as revealed during an APK teardown. Users can expect various elements typically found in weather applications such as current conditions, feels like temperature, UV index, visibility, wind speed, humidity, sunrise and sunset timings, atmospheric pressure, and high/low temperatures. Additionally, the app includes carousels for both hourly and 10-day forecasts. Its user interface (UI) appears to align with Google’s Material You design language, with the added flexibility of allowing users to rearrange cards to display preferred information at the top.
An APK teardown of the Weather app uncovered references to an AI-powered feature known as AI Weather Summaries, although details about this functionality are currently limited. This feature’s name implies the ability to generate weather summaries for specific time periods and locations. Furthermore, the app is expected to offer precipitation notifications and detailed weather forecasts.
While Google’s Weather app is anticipated to launch alongside the Pixel 9 series as a pre-installed app, some users have successfully installed it on older Pixel devices and other Android 14 smartphones. However, since the app is not officially released yet, users may encounter frequent crashes and performance issues. For example, changing the temperature unit on a device caused the app to become unresponsive.
