After the immense success of the adaptation of Casey McQuiston’s bestseller, “Red, White & Royal Blue,” Amazon MGM Studios has given the green light for the development of a sequel. The first film became one of the top three most-watched romantic comedies of all time. Stars Nicholas Galitzine and Taylor Zakhar Perez are set to reprise their roles for the sequel. Matthew López, who made his feature debut with the first film, is back to co-write the script for the sequel, this time with McQuiston. Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter from Berlanti Schechter Films will return to produce the film, along with Michael McGrath and López. McQuiston will serve as an executive producer.
“Red, White & Royal Blue” follows the story of Alex Claremont-Diaz, played by Taylor Zakhar Perez. After his mother, portrayed by Uma Thurman, is elected President, Alex is thrust into the spotlight as the American equivalent of a young royal. Despite his charm and intelligence, Alex has a longstanding feud with his royal counterpart from across the pond, Prince Henry, played by Nicholas Galitzine. When a photo of an altercation between the two gets leaked to the tabloids, U.S./British relations become strained. To control the damage, a plan is devised to stage a fake truce between the rivals. What starts as a fake friendship for the public eye evolves into a deeper connection between Alex and Henry, leading to a secret romance that could impact international relations and Alex’s mother’s re-election campaign.
While specific details regarding the plot of the sequel remain undisclosed, the announcement of its development was made during a Q&A session following a screening of the film at the Culver Theater. The news came ahead of Amazon’s upcoming upfront presentation scheduled for May 14. “Red, White & Royal Blue” was a global hit, becoming the most-watched film on Amazon within its first three weeks of release. The film also contributed significantly to an increase in subscribers for the streaming platform.
Nicholas Galitzine, who plays Prince Henry in the film, is gaining recognition for his work. He can be seen alongside Anne Hathaway in the Prime Video rom-com “The Idea of You” and in Starz’s historical drama “Mary & George,” where he stars with Julianne Moore and Tony Curran. Taylor Zakhar Perez, known for his role in “The Kissing Booth” films and Starz’s “Minx,” is also making a name for himself in the industry.
Galitzine is represented by Curtis Brown Group, WME, Anonymous Content, Gang, Tyre, Ramer, and Johnson Shapiro Slewett & Kole. Perez is represented by Paradigm, Principal Entertainment LA, and Felker Toczek Suddleson. López is represented by CAA, Brillstein Entertainment Partners, and Gang, Tyre, Ramer. McQuiston is represented by KT Literary, UTA, and Alexander, Lawrence, Frumes & Labowitz.
Through the success of “Red, White & Royal Blue,” Amazon MGM Studios is looking to capitalize on the popularity of the original film by developing a sequel that continues the captivating story of Alex and Henry. With the original creative team and cast members onboard, fans can expect another heartwarming and entertaining installment in this modern romantic comedy series.
