A mother in Ballymartin, Northern Ireland, recently shared the harrowing story of her eight-year-old son, Zach Bloomer-Rogers, who suffered burns on his hands and arms after coming into contact with a plant known to be a “risk to public health.” The incident occurred at The White Water on the Newry Road Kilkeel in early May, leaving Zach with blisters and burns that his mother, Danielle Bloomer-Rogers, fears will leave him “scarred for life.”
According to Mrs. Bloomer-Rogers, the burns on Zach’s hands and arms are severe, with doctors indicating that his hands may never fully recover as they have become highly sensitive to sunlight. The plant responsible for the burns is identified as giant hogweed, an invasive species that is known to cause photodermatitis or photosensitivity when in contact with the skin, leading to blistering, pigmentation, and long-lasting scars.
In the aftermath of the incident, Mrs. Bloomer-Rogers sought medical advice for her son’s burns but was disappointed with the indifference shown by healthcare professionals. Despite the severity of Zach’s condition, doctors did not seem concerned, offering limited guidance on managing the burns and underestimating the potential harm caused by the plant.
Desperate for help, Mrs. Bloomer-Rogers reached out to the Newry, Mourne, and Down District Council in the hopes that they would take action to remove the dangerous plant from the area. However, she was met with disappointment as the council failed to respond or address the issue, leaving the plant unchecked and posing a continued threat to local residents.
Reflecting on her son’s ordeal, Mrs. Bloomer-Rogers urges other parents to exercise caution and vigilance when allowing their children near unfamiliar plants.
