The recovery operation for the enormous container ship that collided with and caused the collapse of Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge in March is currently underway. The Unified Command, consisting of various local and federal agencies, is carefully managing the complex procedure to move the ship away from the site.
After eight weeks of being stuck in the Patapsco River, the ship has finally become buoyant and is being taken to shore by tugboats. The ship, known as the Dali, caused a catastrophic failure of the bridge, resulting in six construction worker fatalities and widespread disruptions to shipping across the East Coast. Maryland Gov. Wes Moore expressed optimism that the ship would be entirely removed within days.
The Unified Command has stated that the refloat and transit sequence is meticulously designed to ensure that response personnel maintain control of the vessel at all times. Engineers have planned to inspect the ship, release some of the anchors and mooring lines, and de-ballast the 1.25 million gallons of water previously pumped onto the ship to compensate for weight differences caused by precision cutting on May 13.
Once the ship is freed and in open water, up to five tugboats will escort the Dali on a 2-and-a-half-mile journey to a local port at a speed of approximately 1 mph. The route has been checked and verified as clear by a survey vessel. A preliminary report from the National Transportation Safety Board revealed that the Dali lost power twice in three minutes before the collision occurred. Fortunately, the 22 crew members on board were unharmed but have been unable to disembark since the incident due to U.S. regulations mandating minimum staffing requirements.
Government officials, investigators, and union representatives have visited the crew, who have expressed concerns about potential legal repercussions and emotional distress following the incident. The FBI has initiated a criminal investigation into the collision, emphasizing the severity of the situation. The disruption caused by the crash at one of the top 20 U.S. ports, Baltimore, has had a significant impact on supply chains along the East Coast.
The ongoing recovery efforts for the Dali and the collapsed bridge in Baltimore exemplify the challenges faced in such complex maritime incidents.
