The rise of Sen. J.D. Vance as the Republican vice-presidential candidate has brought his hometown of Middletown, Ohio into the spotlight. Vance did not hold back in his speech at the Republican National Convention, blaming policies supported by then-senator Biden for the decline of his beloved small town. He harshly criticized Biden for backing poor trade deals that destroyed middle-class manufacturing jobs, flooding the country with cheap Chinese goods, foreign labor, and deadly fentanyl. According to Vance, Biden’s policies had a direct negative impact on his community.
In addition to criticizing Biden’s policies, Vance also opened up about his personal struggles. He shared the story of his mother’s battle with addiction, which eventually led her to lose her nursing license. Despite her issues, Vance credited his grandmother, or “Mamaw,” for keeping him on the right path. It was Mamaw who threatened to run over a local kid who sold drugs if Vance continued to hang out with him. Vance’s personal story of overcoming adversity and finding success thanks to his grandmother’s guidance added another layer of depth to his speech.
Throughout the convention, other speakers raised various health and social issues, with a focus on contrasting the policies of Trump and Biden. Rep. Matt Gaetz claimed that under Biden-Harris, America has become sicker, lonelier, and poorer, while prospering under Trump. Callista Gingrich highlighted Trump’s defense of the rights of healthcare providers to act in accordance with their conscience, with a possible nod to the anti-abortion agenda. Thomas Homan, former director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement under Trump, criticized the Biden-Harris administration’s handling of immigration issues, calling it a choice leading to national suicide. Rep. Monica De La Cruz also raised concerns about benefits for illegal immigrants at the expense of seniors.
Several speakers at the convention sought to draw comparisons between the strength and resilience of Trump and what they viewed as Biden’s physical and cognitive decline. Trump’s image of raising his fist after being shot at was highlighted as a symbol of strength, while questioning Biden’s ability to lead effectively. The convention aimed to solidify the image of Trump as a strong leader in contrast to Biden’s perceived weaknesses.
