SpaceX, founded by Elon Musk, achieved a significant milestone by successfully sending text messages through its Starlink satellites using T-Mobile’s network. This development is part of SpaceX’s strategy to bring direct-to-device (D2D) cell service to the market in the near future.
SpaceX recently launched six Starlink satellites equipped with D2D capabilities, following authorization from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to test the technology. The company announced that it performed a texting demonstration on Monday, where unmodified cell phones on the ground communicated with the new satellites in space. This successful test validates that the system works and meets the high demand for D2D capabilities.
There is significant interest in the integration of D2D capabilities into the Starlink network, leading to valuable partnerships with mobile operators such as T-Mobile, Canada’s Rogers, Australia’s Optus, and Japan’s KDDI. SpaceX plans to introduce D2D text service this year and expand its offerings to include voice, data, and Internet of Things (IoT) services by 2025. Currently, Starlink internet service has grown to a network of over 5,000 satellites, serving more than 2.3 million customers worldwide.
Various smartphone manufacturers, service providers, and satellite companies are actively collaborating to provide D2D services. One noteworthy example is Apple, which has invested significantly in its “Emergency SOS with Satellite” service. This service was rolled out with the iPhone 14 models through a partnership with satellite operator Globalstar. Additionally, Qualcomm, a leading telecommunications company, recently concluded its partnership with satellite communications company Iridium. In response to this development, Iridium announced its new initiative called “Project Stardust” and plans to test its D2D service in 2025, with a rollout expected by 2026.
SpaceX’s achievement in enabling text messaging via Starlink satellites marks a significant step towards its ultimate goal of providing global D2D cell service.
