The controversial social media influencer Andrew Tate and his brother Tristan were arrested in Romania on Monday night. The arrest was made in connection to allegations of sexual aggression that date back to between 2012 and 2015. The brothers were detained under an European arrest warrant issued by Westminster Magistrates’ Court in London, with an ongoing investigation pending. Both Andrew, 37, and Tristan, 35, have denied all allegations against them. A lawyer representing four women who accused Andrew Tate of rape and sexual assault stated that they alerted British police immediately upon receiving information last week that Andrew was planning to flee Romania. This prompted the issuance of an arrest warrant. Matthew Jury, managing partner at McCue Jury and Partners, welcomed Tate’s arrest and expressed gratitude to British authorities for taking the concerns seriously. The lawyer also urged prominent figures like Piers Morgan and Tucker Carlson to stop giving Tate a platform and to properly interrogate him on the allegations. Allowing Tate to spread disinformation about the criminal allegations he faces only serves to support and spread his toxic influence further among vulnerable young men and boys.
The brothers are facing rape and human trafficking charges in Romania, their country of residence. They had previously been in jail and later under house arrest since their detention in December 2022. The allegations suggest that the brothers, along with two Romanian women, formed an organised crime group in 2021 to commit human trafficking in Romania and other countries, including the US and UK. Andrew Tate recently won an appeal in August 2023 to be released from house arrest as he awaits trial, though no date has been set. They were allowed to travel within Romania but were prohibited from leaving the country.
In January, a Romanian court overturned a decision to seize Andrew Tate’s assets. This decision allowed him to regain access to his supercars, properties, and designer watches. Prosecutors had previously seized 15 luxury vehicles, more than 10 properties and homes, 14 designer watches, two ingots, and cash, totaling an estimated value of €3.6 million. The assets were seized to prevent them from being sold or hidden.
