The Launch of BSNL’s New Over-the-Air (OTA) and Universal SIM (USIM) Platform

BSNL, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited, recently announced the launch of a new 4G and 5G-ready OTA and USIM platform in India. The state-owned telecommunications provider aims to enhance service quality and connectivity through this initiative in alignment with the government’s “Atmanirbhar Bharat” campaign.

The new platform developed in collaboration with Pyro Holdings allows users to swap their SIM cards without facing any regional restrictions. This freedom enables customers to easily replace their SIM cards and experience faster network speeds and improved coverage across the country. Additionally, the platform supports both 4G and 5G networks, with the latter expected to be rolled out within six to eight months of achieving the 4G rollout target by March 2025.

Chairman and Managing Director of BSNL, Ravi A. Robert Jerard, highlighted the advantages of the new platform for customers. It provides ease of number portability, allows for SIM replacement without geographical constraints, and facilitates modifications to SIM profiles and remote file management on SIM cards. This user-friendly approach aims to enhance the overall telecommunications experience for BSNL users nationwide.

BSNL’s new platform is expected to bridge the digital divide in rural regions and remote areas by offering improved network capabilities and services. The initiative also aligns with the Government of India’s “Atmanirbhar Bharat” vision, which emphasizes self-reliance at both an individual and national level. By expanding its network towers and enhancing technology, BSNL aims to contribute to the country’s journey towards self-sufficiency.

BSNL has set up 15,000 network towers across various circles and plans to add an additional 80,000 towers by October of the current year. The telecom provider is on track to complete the full-fledged rollout of its 4G services by March 2025, further strengthening its network infrastructure. The cloud-based 4G core technology powering BSNL’s network is also poised to support the future implementation of 5G services, marking a significant technological advancement for the state-owned telecommunications company.

The launch of BSNL’s new OTA and USIM platform represents a significant step towards enhancing telecommunications services in India. By integrating advanced technology, improving network coverage, and supporting the transition to 5G, BSNL is poised to provide users with a more seamless and efficient communication experience. This initiative not only benefits customers but also contributes to the larger national agenda of self-reliance and technological advancement.
