The Power of AI in Predicting Health Risks

A collaborative effort between researchers from Northeastern University, the Technical University of Denmark, and the University of Copenhagen has yielded remarkable results. The team employed cutting-edge AI techniques to train their predictive model using data from six million Danish individuals. This model, named life2vec, draws on the same training methods used in Large Language Models (LLMs) like ChatGPT but applies it to real-life events. Instead of analyzing the relationships between words and sentences, life2vec recognizes the intricate web of connections between various events and experiences throughout a person’s lifetime.

Sune Lehmann, a data scientist at the Technical University of Denmark, explains that the model offers a more comprehensive understanding of human life than previous approaches. According to Lehmann, “the whole story of a human life, in a way, can also be thought of as a giant long sentence of the many things that can happen to a person.” By utilizing embedding spaces, which assigns a mathematical representation to real-world factors, life2vec uncovers relationships between factors such as health indicators, education, income levels, and mortality rates.

When put to the test, life2vec surpassed existing methods in predicting causes of death and determining when and how someone may pass away. However, it is important to note that there are certain events, like car accidents, which are inherently unpredictable and beyond the scope of the model’s capabilities. Furthermore, the AI exhibited the ability to predict certain personality traits, including extroversion. These advancements in AI technology hold tremendous potential for uncovering patterns and connections that may escape human observation, ultimately leading to a deeper understanding of the relationship between our lifestyle choices and our overall well-being.

While the results of this study are promising, the researchers emphasize the need for caution. The data used for training the AI model exclusively pertains to Danish individuals, which introduces sociodemographic bias. It is crucial to expand the studies to include diverse populations to ensure the accuracy and fairness of the predictions. Additionally, privacy concerns and personal data protection must be addressed before the implementation of such models in real-world settings. Computer scientist Tina Eliassi-Rad from Northeastern University acknowledges this by stating, “Even though we’re using prediction to evaluate how good these models are, the tool shouldn’t be used for prediction on real people.”

The integration of AI into healthcare has the potential to revolutionize the way we approach disease prevention and management. By harnessing the power of machine learning, researchers can analyze vast amounts of data in a fraction of the time it would take humans.
