Victor Peng, president of AMD, expressed confidence in the growing market for AI PCs and expects increased adoption in the second half of the year. The launch of ChatGPT in November 2022 ignited widespread interest in AI. This chatbot gained significant popularity for its ability to generate human-like responses to user prompts. As a result, the tech research firm Canalys predicted a boost in PC sales as consumers seek devices equipped with AI capabilities. The market research firm expects that by 2027, 60% of all PCs shipped will be AI-capable. This surge in demand opens up new opportunities for AMD and other competitors in the AI PC market.

Despite the evident potential of AI PCs, industry leaders understand that the adoption of AI-powered devices will take time to penetrate deeply into the market. HP’s president and CEO, Enrique Lores, expressed excitement about the impact AI PCs will have on the overall PC category. However, he acknowledged the need for patience in realizing the full potential of AI PCs. Initially, these devices will target specific segments of the enterprise PC market, with broader deployment and increased use cases expected over time as costs decrease.

Research firm International Data Corporation (IDC) predicts that the integration of AI capabilities into PCs will serve as a catalyst for upgrades, driving increased sales. This year, IDC expects shelves to be stocked with AI PCs, providing improved performance and enhanced user experiences. AMD, with recent announcements and developments in AI and other traditional businesses, believes it is in a strong position to capitalize on the growing demand for AI PCs.

AMD, Nvidia, and Intel are fierce competitors in the GPU market, which is critical for AI and high-performance computing. Currently, Nvidia dominates the market, particularly in GPUs used for AI applications. OpenAI’s ChatGPT, one of the most prominent AI models, runs on Nvidia GPUs. However, AMD aims to challenge this dominance. In January, AMD announced the Ryzen 8000G Series desktop processors, promising powerful performance for intensive workloads and gaming. Moreover, AMD recently launched the Instinct MI300X chips designed for large language model training to compete with Nvidia’s H100 chips.

Intel, a long-time player in the chip market, joined the race by launching Core Ultra chips in December. These processors are specifically designed to accelerate AI programs, delivering faster performance. Intel has partnered with leading PC manufacturers, including Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, and Lenovo, to power more than 230 AI PCs. The entry of Intel further highlights the growing importance of AI-engaged technology and its potential to reshape the PC industry.

As AI continues to mature, its scope and impact are expanding. Victor Peng stated that AI will continue to be a significant factor in the upcoming years. He believes that we are only in the early stages of AI development, with vast opportunities yet to be explored and realized. AMD recognizes the broad potential of AI, not only in data center GPUs but also in servers. With the launch of the MI300 chips, designed for server applications, AMD aims to gain further market share and solidify its position in the AI industry.
