The Washington Commanders have announced their plans to build a statue to honor their late former safety, Sean Taylor. This decision comes two years after unveiling a memorial installation that faced criticism from fans and has since been permanently removed. Sean Taylor, whose No. 21 was retired in 2022, will be the first former player of the organization to be immortalized with a statue. Taylor’s daughter, Jackie, who was just 18 months old when her father was tragically murdered in November 2007, will be participating in the design of the statue.

The initial memorial installation that was displayed inside the stadium failed to meet the expectations of many fans. Criticisms were made regarding details such as the jersey (Reebok instead of Nike), the absence of tape on the facemask, and the incorrect style of socks and cleats. In response to the feedback, the organization made alterations to the installation; however, it was ultimately decided to remove it entirely.

There is currently no set date for the unveiling of the statue, but the team is planning to meet with a sculptor to begin the process.
