The Rise of Miller Moss: USC’s New Starting Quarterback

Miller Moss, once a backup quarterback for USC, has finally earned the position of starting quarterback after showing patience and dedication for three seasons. This move was not a surprise, as head coach Lincoln Riley officially named Moss the Trojans’ starting quarterback for the upcoming 2024 season. Moss, a junior, will now be stepping into the significant role left by Caleb Williams, who had an impressive two seasons at USC, winning a Heisman Trophy and throwing for over 8,000 yards and 72 touchdowns. Despite Moss’ limited playing time with only 59 pass attempts for 681 yards and seven touchdowns, he has proven himself worthy of the starting position.

Moss effectively secured his spot as the starting quarterback during the Holiday Bowl, when he took over for Williams, who chose not to play in the game. Moss made the most of this opportunity by leading USC to a 42-28 win over Louisville, setting a Holiday Bowl record with six touchdowns. This outstanding performance showcased Moss’ talent and solidified his position as a quarterback to watch. Head coach Riley recognized Moss’ dedication and improvement, praising him for staying with the team and developing his skills.

Throughout the offseason and into fall camp, Moss demonstrated strong leadership qualities both on and off the field. He represented USC at Big Ten media days in Indianapolis and established himself as a key player for the team. Despite receiving praise from Riley and other staff members for his progress and knowledge of the system, Moss remained humble and focused on his goal of becoming the starting quarterback. Quarterbacks coach Luke Huard commended Moss for his development and ability to make all the necessary throws.

As USC prepares to face LSU in Las Vegas for their season opener on Sep. 1, all eyes will be on Miller Moss as he officially takes on the role of starting quarterback. With his patience, dedication, and impressive performance during the Holiday Bowl, Moss has proven that he is ready to lead the Trojans on the field. As he steps into this new chapter of his football career, Moss will continue to work hard and showcase his talent as USC’s starting quarterback.
