Police authorities are intensifying their efforts to apprehend the suspect behind the Clapham chemical attack, believing that he is receiving assistance from others. In a recent update, the police released new images and footage of Abdul Shokoor Ezedi, the alleged perpetrator of the attack. Investigators are targeting more of his associates in order to gather information about his whereabouts and possible connections to the crime. Commander Jon Savell stated that teams have been tirelessly working around the clock to track Ezedi’s latest movements and bring him to justice.
The image of Ezedi’s last known sighting at 10.04pm on the evening of the attack was made public by the police. The image shows him passing the Unilever building and heading towards Victoria Embankment in London. Police have been meticulously analyzing CCTV footage and conducting extensive inquiries to narrow down his current location. The manhunt, led by the Metropolitan Police’s Specialist Crime Command, involves over 100 officers and support from other police forces across the UK, including those in Northumbria and British Transport Police.
The details of the attack indicate that the substance used by Ezedi was highly corrosive, concentrated, and potentially life-threatening. The targeted woman, who had a previous connection to Ezedi, remains in a critical but stable condition in the hospital. However, there are concerns that she may lose sight in her right eye. Her young daughters, aged eight and three, have also sustained injuries, but these are not believed to be life-changing. During the attack, Ezedi allegedly threw the younger child to the ground before attempting to flee the scene in a vehicle. He crashed into a parked vehicle and subsequently fled on foot, evading capture thus far.
Counter terrorism officers have been conducting painstaking work to examine hundreds of hours of CCTV footage as part of the investigation. Their efforts have successfully traced Ezedi’s movements from his last-known location at 9.47pm on Allhallows Lane in the City of London. He was captured on CCTV traveling along Upper Thames Street and into Pauls Walk, passing the City of London School, and then heading towards Blackfriars Bridge. His most recent sighting occurred at 10.04pm, almost a week ago. Despite receiving over 200 calls regarding potential sightings, none of them have proven to be fruitful.
Abdul Shokoor Ezedi is said to have arrived in the UK from Afghanistan in 2016, reportedly hiding in the back of a lorry. According to the PA news agency, he had a previous conviction for sexual assault and exposure. Surprisingly, he managed to avoid imprisonment and instead received a suspended sentence at Newcastle Crown Court in January 2018. He was placed on the sex offender register for 10 years and ordered to complete 200 hours of unpaid work. Questions have been raised about how Ezedi was granted asylum despite his criminal history, with speculation that a priest’s confirmation of his conversion to Christianity played a role in influencing a tribunal judge’s decision.
