Google announced the release of Android 15 Beta 2 during its annual developer conference, Google I/O 2024. The latest beta version of the operating system update is now available for download on Google Pixel smartphones while select smartphones will receive the update in the upcoming weeks. This year, Google is focusing on enhancing the security and privacy features of Android 15, with the latest beta version introducing several powerful new features for beta testers.
One of the key additions to Android 15 is the Private Space feature, which was showcased during a developer session at Google I/O. This feature allows users to hide specific apps, such as banking, finance, dating, or social media apps, in a secure location on their smartphone. The apps placed in the Private Space can be updated through a separate Play Store app and will have access to their own storage area that is inaccessible to other apps on the device. Users can easily locate the Private Space feature in the default app drawer on Android 15 by scrolling down to the end of the app list.
Android 15 comes with upgraded anti-theft protections to prevent unauthorized access to stolen devices. Users will now be required to provide their biometrics when attempting to adjust the screen timeout, access passkeys, or disable Find My Device. In addition, a new feature called “Theft Detection Lock” will automatically lock the device when an abrupt motion indicative of theft is detected. The “Offline Device Lock” will secure the device if internet access is turned off, a common tactic used by thieves.
Another valuable anti-theft feature introduced in Android 15 is the ability to remotely lock or wipe the device using a different number in case of theft. This feature, known as Remote Lock, provides users with a way to protect their data and privacy even if their device falls into the wrong hands. These anti-theft features are aimed at discouraging smartphone theft and will be available on devices running Android 10 and newer versions.
Aside from security enhancements, Android 15 includes various other features to improve user experience. Users can now automatically enable Bluetooth the following day, ensuring the continuous operation of the Find My Device network. Google has also made improvements to the widget picker and redesigned the volume control panel to enhance usability during one-handed operations. The beta version of Android 15 is currently available for download on a range of Pixel devices, including Pixel 8, Pixel 7, Pixel 6, Pixel Fold, and Pixel Tablet. Select smartphones from other manufacturers will also be eligible to receive the Android 15 update.
