The ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine has escalated as both countries reportedly launched mass drone attacks against each other for the second consecutive day. The Russian Defense Ministry stated that at least 35 Ukrainian drones were shot down overnight in southwestern Russia. One of the attacks appeared to target a Russian military airport, which hosts bomber aircraft used in the war in Ukraine. Meanwhile, Ukraine’s air force claimed to have shot down 20 Iranian-made Shahed drones and an X-59 cruise missile launched by Russian troops.
According to Vasily Golubev, the governor of Russia’s Rostov province, there were “mass drone strikes” near Morozovsk and another town farther west, resulting in the downing of most drones. Fortunately, there were no reported casualties. However, Golubev did not comment on the extent of the damage caused by the attacks. On the Ukrainian side, a civilian was tragically killed near Odesa when a destroyed drone landed on their house. Furthermore, Russian shelling killed an 81-year-old man in central Kherson.
Both Russia and Ukraine have ramped up drone attacks in recent weeks as they aim to demonstrate their capabilities and resolve in the ongoing war. Despite a Ukrainian counteroffensive initiated in June, neither side has made significant territorial gains. These drone attacks serve as a show of force, emphasizing that the conflict is far from stagnant. The heightened conflict and casualties indicate that the situation remains tense and volatile.
According to Telegram posts by Gov. Vasily Gladkov, Ukrainian and Russian forces exchanged fire near Terebreno, a Russian village located just kilometers away from the Ukrainian border. Residents of Terebreno were forced to seek shelter due to the fighting. The conflict reportedly began when a “Ukrainian diversionary group” engaged Russian troops. In addition to this, a 69-year-old woman was reported killed in a Ukrainian border village in the Sumy region, allegedly due to a Russian shell.
In a video statement, Andriy Demchenko, a Ukrainian border force official, claimed that multiple Russian “sabotage and reconnaissance” operatives had entered Ukraine’s northern Sumy and Kharkiv regions. Demchenko asserted that Ukrainian forces successfully pushed them back into Russia. While cross-border raids are infrequent, tensions have been high, with the Russian military previously claiming to have killed over 70 attackers, whom they described as Ukrainian military saboteurs.
Ukraine’s foreign minister, Dmytro Kuleba, welcomed Germany’s recent change in attitude towards Ukraine’s European Union (EU) membership bid. Chancellor Olaf Scholz played a pivotal role in the EU’s decision to open membership talks for Ukraine. Scholz proposed that Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, a vocal opponent of Ukraine’s EU membership, leave the room during the EU summit to enable the accession talks to proceed. Kuleba praised Scholz’s actions and expressed hope for a shift in Berlin’s approach towards negotiations with Kyiv.
Ukraine has long considered EU and NATO membership as significant foreign policy goals. The EU’s decision to start accelerated negotiations has provided Ukraine with a substantial morale boost, though it could take several years before joining the 27-member bloc becomes a reality. On the other hand, NATO leaders have yet to establish a clear timeline for Ukraine’s membership bid, despite Russia’s invasion leading to Finland’s acceptance into the military alliance in April. Russian President Vladimir Putin has expressed concerns about the impact of Finland’s NATO accession on Russia-Finland relations.
