In a shocking turn of events, Marvel Studios has announced its decision to sever ties with actor Jonathan Majors. This announcement comes shortly after a New York City jury found him guilty of reckless assault and harassment in his domestic violence trial. Majors, known for his portrayal of He Who Remains, also known as Kang the Conqueror, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), has been a significant presence in several recent Marvel productions.
Jonathan Majors first appeared as Kang the Conqueror during Loki season one in 2021. He continued to portray the character in season two of the show and in the film “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania,” which grossed over $476 million. In addition to his MCU ventures, Majors achieved success in other projects, such as Amazon MGM’s “Creed III,” which earned over $275 million at the box office.

Marvel Studios has faced similar challenges in the past when it comes to recasting actors in specific roles. Early in the MCU, Terrence Howard was cast as Rhodey in “Iron Man”; however, talks broke down during the sequel’s production, leading to Don Cheadle assuming the role. Cheadle has been portraying this character as recently as the Disney+ series “Secret Invasion” released this year.
An Altered Career Trajectory
Before Majors’ arrest in March for alleged assault on girlfriend Grace Jabbari, he had promising prospects for 2023. His performances in “Ant-Man 3” and “Creed III” garnered positive reviews, and his portrayal in the Sundance drama “Magazine Dreams” showcased his versatility as an actor. Unfortunately, despite being acquired by Searchlight and scheduled for a theatrical release on December 8, the movie was pulled from the schedule by the Disney-owned label in October. At present, it remains uncertain whether the film will find its way to audiences through streaming platforms like Hulu.

Following his arrest, Jonathan Majors suffered significant professional setbacks. He was dropped by his manager, 360 Entertainment, and his publicist, The Lede Company. Additionally, he lost several projects, including Protagonist Pictures’ adaptation of Walter Mosley’s novel, “The Man in My Basement,” as well as an ad campaign for the Texas Rangers baseball team. Furthermore, his involvement in an unannounced Otis Redding biopic, tentatively titled “Fifth Season,” was called into question.
