North Korean Leader Kim Jong Un Inspects Russian Military Arsenal

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un made a historic visit to Russia this weekend, where he was given the opportunity to inspect Russia’s nuclear-capable strategic bombers, hypersonic missiles, and warships. Accompanied by President Vladimir Putin’s defense minister, Kim was warmly greeted at Russia’s Knevichi airfield. The visit, which took place around 50 km from Vladivostok, has raised concerns among the United States and South Korea regarding the potential transfer of sensitive missile technology to North Korea and the deepening military cooperation between Moscow and Pyongyang.

A Display of Russian Military Power

During his visit, Kim was given a comprehensive tour of Russia’s military arsenal by Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu. Shoigu showcased Russia’s strategic bombers, including the Tu-160, Tu-95, and Tu-22M3, all of which are capable of carrying nuclear weapons. These aircrafts form the core of Russia’s nuclear air attack force and are able to cover significant distances, including flying from Moscow to Japan and back, as Shoigu pointed out to Kim.

Additionally, Kim was shown the MiG-31I supersonic interceptor aircraft, which is equipped with “Kinzhal” hypersonic missiles. The Kinzhal, aptly named “dagger,” is an air-launched ballistic missile that has the capacity to carry both nuclear and conventional warheads. It boasts an impressive range of 1,500 to 2,000 km and can reach staggering speeds of up to 10 times the speed of sound. Kim was visibly intrigued by the missile technology, actively engaging with Shoigu and demonstrating a keen interest in how the missiles are fired from the aircraft.

An Impressive Naval Force

After the aircraft and missile demonstrations, Kim proceeded to inspect the warships of Russia’s Pacific fleet in Vladivostok. With a scheduled demonstration by the Russian navy, Kim had the opportunity to witness the power and capabilities of Russia’s naval forces firsthand. Although details about the specific warships that Kim inspected remain undisclosed, the showcase served as a reminder of Russia’s maritime military strength.

The United States and South Korea have expressed apprehension over the developing relationship between North Korea and Russia. They argue that military cooperation between the two nations violates U.N. sanctions placed on Pyongyang. These concerns are heightened by the potential transfer of sensitive missile technology to North Korea, which could bolster Kim’s capabilities and pose a threat to both countries. In response, the U.S. and South Korea have vowed to ensure there are consequences for the illicit military cooperation.

Russia, on the other hand, has been publicly embracing Kim’s visit, using it as an opportunity to challenge the United States and its allies. For President Putin, the visit allows him to needle Washington and its Asian allies while potentially securing a deep supply of artillery for the ongoing Ukraine war, which he considers a crucial front in Russia’s battle against the West.

During his visit, Kim also inspected a Russian fighter jet factory that is currently under Western sanctions, further highlighting Russia’s commitment to deepening cooperation with North Korea. Putin and Kim engaged in discussions regarding military matters and the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Despite concerns raised by the international community, Putin assured reporters that Russia has no intention of violating any rules and would continue developing relations with North Korea.

While some have criticized the visit as indications of the growing alliance between North Korea and Russia, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov emphasized that there were no formal agreements planned for signing during Kim’s visit. Russian diplomats rebuked Washington’s objections, arguing that the United States has no right to lecture Moscow, particularly when considering the U.S.’s own military activities around the world.

Kim Jong Un’s visit to Russia has provided him with an unparalleled opportunity to witness and assess Russia’s military capabilities. With demonstrations of advanced aircraft and missile technology, as well as inspections of the Russian navy’s warships, the visit raises concerns regarding potential transfers of sensitive military technology to North Korea. The international community, particularly the United States and South Korea, have voiced their objections, citing violations of U.N. sanctions. Nevertheless, both Russia and North Korea have emphasized their commitment to cooperation and further deepening their relationship. As the political landscape continues to evolve, it remains to be seen how this visit will impact regional dynamics and North Korea’s military capabilities.
