The Metropolitan Police have charged five individuals following the pro-Palestinian protests that took place in London. Demonstrations against Israel’s bombing of Gaza attracted tens of thousands of people in the capital on Saturday. However, these protests were marked by incidents of alleged assault, racial hatred, and public order offenses. The police faced criticism for their handling of the marches, where over a thousand officers were on duty.
Charges and Arrests
A total of nine individuals were arrested in connection to the protests. Two were arrested on suspicion of assaulting police officers, and seven were arrested for alleged public order offenses. In addition, two women were detained on suspicion of inciting racial hatred following an incident at Trafalgar Square.
The Metropolitan Police have now charged five people in relation to these incidents:
Kadirul Islam
Kadirul Islam, a 33-year-old with no fixed address, has been charged with a racially aggravated public order offense. He allegedly shouted racist abuse during the protests.
Emma Turvey, a 51-year-old from Grays, Essex, has been charged with a public order offense. It is claimed that she threw a can of beer at a protestor in Whitehall.
Atif Sharif
Atif Sharif, a 41-year-old from Walthamstow, east London, has been charged with causing actual bodily harm. He allegedly assaulted a police officer, causing a head injury.
Laura Davis
Laura Davis, a 22-year-old from Barnet, north London, has been charged with a racially aggravated public order offense. This charge stems from an incident near Piccadilly Circus, where an allegedly racist and threatening placard was displayed.
Unidentified 16-Year-Old
A 16-year-old boy, whose identity cannot be disclosed due to his age, has been charged with a public order offense. It is alleged that he directed verbal abuse towards officers who were escorting protesters.
The Metropolitan Police faced criticism for their handling of the pro-Palestinian protests.
