The Seattle Mariners and Minnesota Twins have recently completed a substantial trade involving five players. One of the key acquisitions for the Mariners is second baseman Jorge Polanco. In addition to Polanco, the Mariners also traded reliever Justin Topa, starter Anthony DeSclafani, and minor league pitcher Darren Bowen to the Twins. Topa, 32, enjoyed a successful season with the Mariners, boasting a 2.61 ERA over 75 games and demonstrating his proficiency in striking out opponents. With his exceptional career ground ball rate at 56.5%, Topa brings stability to the Twins’ bullpen.
DeSclafani, who posted a 4.88 ERA in 99⅔ innings last season, missed the final two months due to a flexor strain in his right elbow. While he endured a challenging season, the Mariners believe he has the potential for a resurgence in Minnesota.
Darren Bowen, a 23-year-old pitcher, was a 13th-round pick out of UNC-Pembroke in 2022. In his first year in the minor leagues, he showcased promise with a 3.88 ERA over 55⅔ innings pitched. Although Bowen is still early in his career, the Twins have high hopes for his development and growth within their organization.
Ultimately, the completion of this five-player trade signifies a strategic maneuver by both teams.
