The Detroit Lions Add Veteran Tight End Zach Ertz to Roster

The Detroit Lions have made a significant move to bolster their roster ahead of the NFC Championship Game. The team has agreed to a contract with veteran tight end Zach Ertz, a source confirmed to ESPN. This acquisition comes in response to the injuries suffered by Lions tight end Brock Wright and starting guard Jonah Jackson.

In the divisional round victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, tight end Brock Wright sustained a forearm injury, leaving the team with only one healthy tight end, Sam LaPorta. Coach Dan Campbell expressed concern over Wright’s availability for the upcoming championship game against the San Francisco 49ers. The Lions needed to address this gap in their roster promptly.

In addition to Wright’s injury, starting guard Jonah Jackson underwent surgery for a slight meniscus tear. As a result, he is expected to miss the NFC title game against the 49ers. However, there is a possibility that Jackson could return for the Super Bowl if the Lions advance.

Ertz’s Return to the Field

Zach Ertz, a former player for the Philadelphia Eagles and more recently the Arizona Cardinals, is set to join the Lions. Ertz was released by the Cardinals in November and had been on injured reserve since October due to a quad strain. Despite his recent setbacks, Ertz remains a valuable asset on the field.

Interestingly, Ertz will reunite with Steve Heiden, his former position coach with the Cardinals. This familiarity could prove beneficial for both Ertz and the Lions, as Heiden is well-acquainted with Ertz’s playing style and strengths. As the Lions’ tight ends coach, Heiden will be able to tap into Ertz’s potential effectively.

Ertz’s desire to join a contender and pursue a second Super Bowl ring was evident in his request to be released by the Cardinals. He previously won a Super Bowl ring with the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LII, where he had a standout performance. Ertz’s experience and championship pedigree could provide a boost to the Lions’ aspirations for a Super Bowl appearance.

Zach Ertz has established himself as a top-tier tight end in the NFL throughout his 11-year career. With 709 catches for 7,434 yards and 46 touchdowns, he has been selected to the Pro Bowl three times. Having a player of Ertz’s caliber on the roster adds depth, experience, and playmaking ability to the Lions’ offense.

The Detroit Lions have made a strategic move by signing Zach Ertz to their roster. With injuries to tight end Brock Wright and guard Jonah Jackson, the addition of Ertz brings stability and talent to the team. Ertz’s past success, combined with his connection to coach Steve Heiden, makes him a valuable asset as the Lions prepare for the NFC Championship Game and their Super Bowl aspirations.
