In a devastating incident on Sunday, seven individuals, including a 23-day-old baby girl, lost their lives due to Russian shelling in Ukraine’s southern Kherson region. The country’s Internal Affairs Ministry confirmed this tragic event, stating that the artillery shelling took place in the village of Shiroka Balka, located on the banks of the Dnieper River. This horrifying act claimed the lives of an entire family, consisting of a husband, wife, 12-year-old boy, and the newborn baby girl. Additionally, another resident from the village also fell victim to the attack. The neighboring village of Stanislav also experienced the brutality of Russian shelling, resulting in the deaths of two men and leaving a woman wounded.
The attack on Kherson province occurred shortly after Ukrainian Deputy Defense Minister Hanna Maliar’s comments aimed at dispelling rumors about Ukrainian forces landing on the occupied left bank of the Dnieper in the Kherson region. Maliar emphasized, “Again, the expert hype around the left bank in the Kherson region began. There are no reasons for excitement.” Unfortunately, despite her attempts to alleviate concerns, tragedy unfolded in the region, leaving innocent lives lost.
Sunday’s incident was not an isolated event, as Ukrainian military officials revealed that Russian attacks on the province injured three individuals just a day prior. Amidst the ongoing conflict, Ukraine’s General Staff announced that their forces had achieved “partial success” in the strategically crucial Robotyne area of the Zaporizhzhia region. This area holds significant importance for the Ukrainian military in pushing south towards Melitopol. However, despite intermittent gains, Ukrainian troops have struggled to make substantial progress since launching their counteroffensive in early June.
Reports from Russian officials indicate that multiple drones were shot down by air defense systems in the Belgorod and Kursk regions, which border Ukraine. Ukrainian drone strikes on Russian border regions have become somewhat commonplace, with an increase in attacks witnessed in recent weeks. Notably, drone strikes on Moscow and Crimea, which Russia annexed from Ukraine in 2014, have escalated. Although these attacks may not yield significant military value for Ukraine, they serve to unsettle Russians and remind them of the dire consequences of the ongoing conflict.
The Wagner mercenary group has played a significant role in Russia’s military campaign, but according to British defense officials, there is now a “realistic possibility” that the Kremlin is no longer providing funding. In their intelligence briefing, the Ministry of Defense suggested that Wagner may be moving towards downsizing and reconfiguration to save money. Furthermore, the officials stated that the Kremlin took action against some of Wagner chief Yevgeny Prigozhin’s other business interests. Belarusian authorities were identified as the “second most plausible paymasters” for the group. Thousands of Wagner fighters entered Belarus, a country aligned with Russia, under an agreement that brought an end to their armed rebellion in late June and shielded them, along with Prigozhin, from criminal charges.

The loss of innocent lives, including a newborn baby girl, is a stark reminder of the brutality of war and the urgent need for a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
