Less than one day after being arraigned on charges of trying to subvert the 2020 presidential race, former President Donald Trump on Friday called for the U.S. Supreme Court to step into the 2024 contest.
Trump, the top contender in the Republican presidential primary, claimed that dealing with numerous ongoing legal battles amounts to “election interference” — the very thing he is accused of conspiring to do in his latest indictment. According to Trump, his political opponent has filed weak lawsuits that require significant amounts of time and money to address. He argues that these legal battles are diverting resources that could have been used for campaign activities such as advertisements and rallies. Trump asserts that his popularity remains strong, leading in all polls against his opponent, but believes that the playing field is not level.
In his attempt to address the alleged election interference, Trump called for the U.S. Supreme Court to intercede. However, it remains uncertain what exactly Trump expects the high court to do about his criminal charges. The Supreme Court is primarily responsible for considering cases that have been appealed from lower courts, and it is unclear how Trump’s indictment would fall under its jurisdiction. The alleged conspiracy violated multiple federal statutes, including Conspiracy to Defraud the United States. The charges specifically focus on Trump’s actions leading up to and during the January 6, 2021 incident, when a pro-Trump mob stormed the U.S. Capitol, disrupting the congressional meeting to confirm Biden’s electoral victory.
Following the charges, Trump pleaded not guilty in federal court in Washington, D.C. Trump expressed concerns about the trial taking place in D.C., suggesting that the case should be moved to a state like West Virginia, which has a population more favorable to him. This request stems from Trump’s belief that a Democratic-leaning jury pool in D.C. would be biased against him. While this plea marks Trump’s third time pleading not guilty to criminal charges this year, it may not be his last. Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis is expected to seek additional indictments related to Trump’s attempts to overturn his loss in Georgia’s 2020 election.

A recent New York Times/Siena College poll showed Trump significantly ahead of other GOP competitors, including Florida Governor Ron DeSantis. Even in key nominating states like Iowa, Trump maintains a commanding lead. These poll results suggest that despite the legal challenges he faces, Trump continues to garner significant support within the Republican Party.
